george pendleton white (1801-1849)

george pendleton white first owner of white home, named after family. george son of hugh white , elizabeth spratt white. george scots-irish presbyterian. married ann hutchison on december 14, 1837. george tailor trade. died on february 25, 1849 of pneumonia caught while supervising building crew working on preparing new railroad line.


ann hutchison white (1805 - 1880)

ann hutchison white born on january 9, 1805. 1 of sixteen children. father david hutchison; family lived on plantation along catawba river. david hutchison 1 of earliest white settlers move onto catawba indian land. 1 of brothers a. e. hutchison, 1 of financial backers of indian land chronicle , joined indian land agricultural society when formed in 1850s.


ann hutchison married george pendleton white on december 14, 1837; first owners of white home property.


ann white had reputation woman of strong conviction , decisive action. in 1 story, said have put stop grog shop being set near home mounting mule , after long journey [she] succeeded in purchasing entire tract of land, thereby eliminating undesirable neighbors.


during civil war, ann took in refugees fleeing war torn areas. according various stories, visitors left behind heavy furniture no longer travel with.


after civil war, ann white sold off pieces of family s land in order make money. 1 customer edwin ruthven mills purchased of land in 1872. during civil war, @ battle of crater, led rock hill s company e.


ann white 1 of 7 people sign counter-petition in 1870 opposed incorporation of rock hill town. 7 petitions against incorporation owned four-fifth of land incorporated new town, , have pay majority of taxes. lost fight, , town official incorporated on february 26, 1870.


ann white died on june 21, 1880.

james spratt white

son of george , ann white. james spratt white served in confederate army in american civil war. in february 1865, wrote sister mary fears general sherman march york county, , relief when sherman went in direction.


andrew hutchison white

son of george , ann white. after civil war, became entrepreneur. during town incorporation battle, sided mother against incorporation. 1 of 7 people sign counterpetition in 1870 against incorporation.
