when bachelot , short arrived in honolulu in may 1837, spent 13 days on island. notwithstanding agreement had signed french naval captain abel aubert dupetit thouars allowed french citizens live on island, king kamehameha iii sought deport priests. bachelot , short confined ship on had arrived, clémentine, on may 22. however, clémentine s captain, jules dudoit, refused transport them hawaii. dudoit, british citizen of french descent, met charlton, british consul, , publicly protested priests confinement. efforts secure freedom priests live on island unsuccessful until british naval vessel hms sulphur , french frigate la vénus arrived in honolulu on july 8. ships commanded respectively edward belcher , dupetit thouars, each tried convince authorities allow priests return island. after negotiations proved futile, blockaded harbor, boarded clémentine, , brought bachelot , short ashore. la vénus sent 300 sailors escort them harbor french mission. king kamehameha iii agreed allow priests stay in honolulu until find ship transport them elsewhere, under condition refrain proselytizing.

that year, bachelot, suffered form of rheumatism, became sick. november 1837, had recovered sufficiently leave hawaii. purchased ship , sailed toward micronesia, intending work on mission. bachelot s health worsened after leaving hawaii , died @ sea on december 5, 1837. buried on islet off coast of pohnpei. in 1838, small chapel built near grave.


owing persecution of bachelot , fellow priests, government of france sent frigate l artémise hawaii in 1839. captain, cyrille pierre théodore laplace, had been instructed force government stop persecuting catholics. in response show of force, king kamehameha iii granted catholics freedom of religion.
