bach structured cantata in 7 movements in 2 parts, first 3 movements performed before sermon, others after sermon. first movement choral setting of psalm verses, followed recitative , aria, fourth movement bass solo on quotation of jesus, followed aria , recitative, , closed chorale. bach scored work 3 vocal soloists (soprano (s), alto (a) , bass (b)), four-part choir, , baroque instrumental ensemble: 2 oboes (ob), 2 violins (vl), viola (va), , basso continuo (bc). duration of cantata has been stated 25 minutes.

the opening chorus setting of psalm verses, es wartet alles auf dich, daß du ihnen speise gebest zu seiner zeit. (these wait upon you, may give them nourishment in due saeson). these verses used prayer before meal. bach achieves unity of form, @ same time individual handling of 4 ideas of text, in motet. motifs of instrumental sinfonia of 28 measures continued through of movement, creating unity. es wartet alles auf dich (a) expressed in free polyphony embedded in instrumental music, repeated daß du ihnen speise gibest (b) in free polyphony canonic imitation on 2 themes, instruments playing colla parte, , b repeated within part of sinfonia, continued instrumentally. in following second section, wenn du ihnen gibest … (c) theme of choral fugue, wenn du deine hand auftust … (d) countersubject. instruments play colla parte first, add motifs sinfonia. in third concluding section complete text repeated within part of sinfonia.

in first recitative, kreaturen hält das große rund der welt! (what creatures contained great sphere of world!), librettist paraphases ideas verses 17 25 of same psalm, praises god creator of universe.

the first aria addresses god sustainer of life: du herr, du krönst allein das jahr mit deinem gut. (you lord, alone crown year good.), in close paraphrase of psalms 65:12. alto voice accompanied full orchestra in dance-rhythm irregular grouping of measures in ritornellos.

the fourth , central movement sets biblical words darum sollt ihr nicht sorgen noch sagen: werden wir essen, werden wir trinken (therefore not anxious, saying: eat, drink), sermon on mount. bach gives them bass vox christi (voice of christ), accompanied violins in unison , continuo, takes part in motifs.

the soprano aria, gott versorget alles leben (god takes care of every life), in 2 contrasting parts. first section accompanied festive dotted rhythms , broad melody of solo oboe, second section, marked un poco allegro, again dance. instruments repeat afterwards dotted rhythm of beginning.

in recitative halt ich nur fest ihm mit kindlichem vertrauen (if can hold onto him childlike trust),, last words of soprano enriched strings, vox christi in bach s st matthew passion.

the final chorale four-part setting choir , instruments. features 2 stanzas of hymn. fourth stanza, gott hat die erde zugericht (god has provided earth) relates beginning, god creator, while sixth stanza, wir danken sehr und bitten ihn, daß er uns geb des geistes sinn, daß wir solches recht verstehn (we thank profoundly , pray him give of spirit, understand rightly), expresses thanksgiving, ending on latin word gratias .
