on 22 july 1971 near village of tautavel in pyrénées-orientales, team of prof. henry de lumley discovered 450,000 year old human skull following 7 years of excavations in mountain cave called caune de l arago. since discovery of tautavel man (homo erectus tautavelensis), annual excavations have revealed more 1 hundred human fossils, making cave 1 of largest prehistoric deposits in world.


the skeletons @ tautavel among oldest human remains ever discovered in europe. arago cave, close village, occupied periodically between 690,000 , 35,000 years ago. although scientist not explicitly relate these finds h. heidelbergensis, morphological characteristics of humans preceded neanderthal.
