o callaghan started small pirates such radio dublin. presenter on superpirate radio nova in 1980s, followed sunshine radio (briefly), later energy 103fm , q102 (briefly). spent few years on uk radio, after spell sunshine radio in 1983, starting offshore pirate radio caroline.


after q102, o callaghan joined legal irish radio millennium radio , in 1989 moved newly relaunched 2fm – attempt rtÉ steal of thunder of departed superpirates. presented popular gareth o callaghan in afternoon show similar in theme, tone , content steve wright in afternoon show on bbc radio 1 of late 80s , 90s.this show huge success gaining o callaghan widespread popularity on ireland offering brand , style of commercial radio more reminiscent of radio nova in dublin @ height of popularity.


o callaghan left rtÉ 2fm s afternoon show, having presented breakfast show on station (replacing ian dempsey). afternoon slot occupied rick o shea s eponymously named show. after leaving 2fm, o callaghan took time out radio pursue career in psychology before being named presenter of breakfast show on galway bay fm. on 27 february 2009 gareth launched ireland s newest commercial independent quasi-national radio station 4fm morning show host before moving afternoon slot.


before gay byrne s retirement gay byrne show in 1998, helped bit o callaghan o callaghan left him after getting fed , went rtÉ 2fm instead. des cahill had byrne after that.


writing

o callaghan has been writing since 1995. date, author of 6 best-selling works – 5 novels , memoir. has contributed 2 stories new island open door series, entitled joe s wedding , stray dog.


new island publishes literary fiction, poetry, drama, biography, politics , social affairs. o callaghan wrote day called hope: journey beyond depression own personal experience of severe depression. book detailed how, left radio job each day, retreat bed, thoughts of suicide. became 1 of biggest-selling books in ireland in 2003, , continues sell in huge numbers. has been published in 15 countries, , translated 10 languages.


o callaghan regular contributor many of national newspapers in ireland, having written regularly irish times, sunday independent , evening herald. writing sequel day called hope, , said working on new novel.
