thomas moody walker (1801–1878)


thomas moody walker (c. 1801 – 22 march 1878) , wife mary ann walker, née lamb, (c. 1813 – 15 april 1900) of lincolnshire, england, emigrated south australia 3 children aboard lord goderich, arriving in april 1838.


he founded candle factory in wakefield street, adelaide (between acland , robert streets, neither in existence) in 1840 , 1841 producing enough advertise wares, , making soap few months later, first in field, though burford s making candles few months earlier. @ exhibition of 1845 soaps praised judges comparable in quality of english manufacturer paton , charles, while of wright & linn s hindmarsh soap manufactory , w. h. burford barely inferior. candles , burford s, however, not rated highly of a. h. davis of moore farm. judges opined future importation of both soap , candles not needless unprofitable.


in 1847 gained wine , beer licence fountain inn, on property, adjacent factory, after 3 years allowed lapse , converted place private use.


by 1876 company being managed brothers thomas moody walker, jnr, , frederick charles walker; weekly production of candles around 2,000 pounds (900 kg).


the firm prospered, , plans put woodville council new factory built @ ridleyton, resisted nearby residents, croydon, had become popular middle-class suburb, , quite reasonably anticipated continual nuisance smell such factory.


frederick charles walker retired business in 1880, leaving thomas moody walker, jnr, in sole charge.
