the house demolished in 1868 hon. mark rolle (died 1907) erected in place between 1868-1872 design of charles barry, jr (died 1900) victorian mansion in french chateau style (or franco-italian style termed contemporary issue of building news,) considered today have been building of little architectural merit. may compared, in simpler form, rothschild family s later waddesdon manor, designed french architect. sat within deer park of 370 acres containing large quantity of large , valuable trees. in opinion of hoskins writing in 1954: mark rolle rebuilt house again in worst style of time. richest man in devon built himself ugliest house .
