the andean cock-of-the-rock large passerine, approximately 32 cm (13 in) long , weighing around 265 grams (9.3 oz; 0.584 lb), although males larger , heaviest specimens can reach 300 grams (11 oz; 0.66 lb). birds 1 of many birds species exhibit marked sexual dimorphism. male has large disk-like crest , brilliant scarlet or orange plumage. has black tail , wings, , pale greyish scapulars. female drabber , browner male , has less prominent crest. bill yellowish in male, , dark small yellow tip in female. depending on gender , subspecies there significant variations in colour of iris, ranging red on orange , yellow bluish-white in male, , whitish on reddish brown in female. in addition display calls described in breeding section below, foraging birds give loud querulous “tank?” when disturbed or in flight.
