the history of lobbes abbey known in relative detail because fortunately, , unlike abbeys, ancient annals survived. monastery founded saint landelin around 650. landelin young man well-to-do family in bapaume, lived sinful life head of band of brigands. after repenting, founded monastery @ place had committed sins, @ shores of river sambre. number of monks @ new monastery increased rapidly , founder grew tired of duties abbot, in 680 resigned post , dedicated rest of life worship of god.
early fame
landelin succeeded ursmer (saint ursmarus) devoted himself preaching christianity among largely pagan franks. fame of saint ursmarus , successors ermin of lobbes, abel of reims , theodulph of lobbes, made lobbes important monastery in belgium of time. under anson, 6th abbot (776-800), abbey school rose great fame.
in 864 hucbert, brother-in-law of lothair ii of lotharingia, became lay abbot. through decadent lifestyle brought monastery destitution. successor, franco, both abbot of lobbes , bishop of liège, situation continued until 960. abbey became fief of bishop of liège, although ecclesiastically situated in bishopric of cambrai.
in 954 abbey raided , burned during hungarian invasions of europe.
under abbots folcuin (965-990), heriger of lobbes (990-1007) , hugo (1033–1053), abbey , school once again attained great reputation.
decline
after period fame of abbey gradually declined, until monastic revival originating bursfelde congregation brought fresh life in 15th century. in 1569 lobbes, st. vaast s abbey in arras, , several other abbeys, combined form benedictine congregation of exempt monasteries of flanders.
dissolution
in 1794, last abbot, vulgise de vignron, , 43 monks expelled monastery french revolutionary troops. under law of 2 september 1796 abbey dissolved. of monastic buildings, including abbey church of saint peter, destroyed. former burial church of saint ursmarus survived parish church. few other minor buildings later incorporated railway station.
