after unsuccessful attempt of bernardo de la torre in 1543 make round trip , return mexico, lópez de villalobos commissioned ortiz de retez same mission time taking more southerly route. on 16 may 1545 ortiz de retez, in command of san juan de letran, left port in tidore, island spain s stronghold in maluku islands , going way of talaud islands , schoutens, reached northern coast of new guinea, coasted till end of august when, having got 5°s latitude, contrary winds , currents forced return tidore arrived on 5 october 1545. many islands encountered , first charted, along northern coast of new guinea, , in padaidos, le maires, ninigos, kaniets , hermits, of spanish names given.


on 20 june 1545 @ mouth of mamberamo river (that charted san agustin) took possession of land spanish crown, in process giving island name known today. called nueva guinea owing resemblance of local inhabitants peoples of guinea coast in west africa.


the main source retez s voyage of garcia de escalante alvarado, part of villalobos expedition, , who, after return spain, wrote chronicle sent antonio de mendoza, viceroy of new spain.


ortiz de retez later imprisoned portuguese in malukus along remaining members of villalobos expedition; according escalante, 1 of 117 later repatriated portuguese in 1548.
