background

many years ago region covered wild grasses called kharka . farmers used bring cattle graze on land. area boader of 2 small kingdoms i.e. argha , khanchi during chaubisi rajya (24 principalities). there conflict ownership of land between 2 monarchs of place. later, in interest of public welfare, kings decided make treaty between 2 little kingdoms. treaty english translation of sandhi means formally concluded , ratified agreement between states. 2 states created treaty land of kharka lead name of sandhikharka, headquarter of arghakhanchi district.

on september 8, 2002, town involved in massive battle between government forces , thousands of maoists, reportedly led 2 wanted terrorists of time top bahadur rayamajhi , pampha bhusal come district. heavily armed rebels engaged bases of civilian police, armed police , royal nepalese army , overpowered them following few hours of gunbattle. torched government buildings except hospital, never being rebuilt. 50 policemen , 70 rebels killed in night-long battle, 36 police injured. however, doubts remain on how many of dead maoists. second attack launched on september 10, 2002, in guerillas killed @ least 65 security personnel, including soldiers, through 12 hours of fighting. forty-one personnel reported injured in attack. telecommunication tower destroyed result of second attack, , reinforcements rushed in helicopter government-sponsored effort hold town. unnamed leaders said lack of communication , failed response authorities led government s defeats. cnn speculated these attacks aimed @ disrupting upcoming election forcing nepali government impose state of emergency.


2005 maoist attack

maoists launched third attack on march 4, 2005. operation backfired, , nepali military killed 30 maoists in bbc called 1 of bloodiest clashes since royal coup. there no casualties of troops. after forcing rebels retreat, military recovered crude bombs, terrorist documents , equipment used operate mines . despite military s success, king gyanendra of nepal imposed state of emergency, detained political party leaders , imposed censorship of press. nepal s military released statement on fighting:



on 4 march, terrorists... fled after strong resistance security forces. in action, 30 terrorists estimated have been killed , injured.
