by late 1970s, cayman airways had commenced second nonstop route united states service 5 times week between grand cayman , houston, intercontinental airport (iah) being flown bac one-eleven series 500. in 1979, additional bac one-eleven jet hawker siddeley 748 turboprop , britten-norman trislander stol (short take off , landing) prop aircraft purchased.


the airline replaced 2 bac one-eleven jets boeing 727-200 aircraft in 1982, strengthening airline s regional , international capability, , allowed introduction of first class service. cayman airways operated douglas dc-8-52 jetliner , leased boeing 727-100 jet during 1980s. these jets replaced boeing 737-200 , boeing 737-300 aircraft. boeing 737-400 jetliners operated @ well. @ 1 time or during 1980s, cayman airways offered scheduled or charter service atlanta, baltimore, boston, chicago, detroit, houston, minneapolis, newark, new york city, philadelphia , st. louis kingston , montego bay in jamaica. airline served panama city, panama in recent past.


the airline flew nonstop @ 1 point between miami , grand turk island , providenciales in turks & caicos islands boeing 727-200 , boeing 737-200 jetliners. these routes flown carrier did not directly serve cayman islands. cayman airlines has operated jet service cayman brac on years boeing 727-200, boeing 737-200 , boeing 737-400 aircraft, including nonstop flights between cayman brac , miami, , continues boeing 737-300 jets.


besides nonstop flights several destinations in u.s., airline operates nonstop jet service between grand cayman , havana, cuba, kingston, jamaica, la ceiba, honduras, montego bay, jamaica , roatan, honduras. non-jet flights between grand cayman, cayman brac , little cayman operated de havilland canada dhc-6 twin otter series 300 , saab 340b turboprop aircraft.


the airline struggled throughout 1990s; however, financial assistance cayman islands government, financial re-structuring, newer, more modern aircraft , addition of new destinations such chicago, dallas/ft. worth (both served on seasonal basis) , havana, cuba appear have helped airline. according cayman airways website, 4 new boeing 737 max 8 jetliners progressively introduced between 2018 , 2020 allowing eventual retirement of boeing 737-300 aircraft operated airline. airline has added 1 boeing 737-800 interim measure. cayman airways express introduced saab 340b regional turboprop aircraft between 2015 , 2016 in tandem eventual planned phased retirement of dhc-6 twin otter series 300 aircraft part of overall cayman airways fleet modernization plan. on wednesday 5 january 2017, cayman airways initiated charter service los angeles (lax) boeing 737-800 registration vp-cng. of wednesday 8 november 2017, retirement process of boeing 737-300 has begun first aircraft; reg: vp-cky msn: 26282 737-3q8
