the site of barra olympic park formerly occupied autódromo internacional nelson piquet, known jacarepaguá. former formula 1 circuit hosted brazilian grand prix on number of occasions throughout 1980s, before grand prix went original home @ autódromo josé carlos pace, interlagos, in 1990. jacarepaguá partly demolished make way city of sports complex, cluster of 3 venues constructed 2007 pan american games, held in rio de janeiro. venues consisted maria lenk aquatic center, held diving, swimming , synchronized swimming events, rio olympic arena, held basketball , artistic gymnastics events, , barra velodrome, held track cycling , speed roller skating events. construction of city of sports not without setbacks – original plan complex called large-scale entertainment complex, valued @ r$ 500 million , contracted private firms construction. these plans, however, fell through, , smaller-scale plan complex adopted instead. opposition efforts preservationists of jacarepaguá, unsuitable soil @ construction site , numerous strike actions workers delayed venue s construction, planned begin in 2005, delayed until mid-2006. despite these challenges, venues completed in time games in july 2007, , cost relatively cheaper r$ 205 million construct, venues smaller planned.
in 2009, rio de janeiro bid host 2016 summer olympics , paralympics. plans new array of venues @ city of sports, rebranded barra olympic park, along complete demolition of jacarepaguá, in works. barra velodrome, however, not approved international cycling union appropriate venue track cycling events @ olympics. decided costs upgrade velodrome equally expensive building new venue, rio olympic velodrome, built west of rio olympic arena, conceived, barra velodrome being demolished in 2013. other new venues constructed olympics include carioca arenas, olympic tennis center, , temporary olympic aquatics stadium, built on site of former barra velodrome, , future arena venues.
