the second location, built 1872 1876 @ southwest corner of madison avenue , east 44th street, designed james renwick, architect of st. patrick’s cathedral, in lombardic style. building embellished in 1902–1903 triple french romanesque revival portal stanford white, took inspiration church of saint-gilles, gard, between arles , nîmes, white had admired in 1878; sculptures in tympana renaissance-inspired. portal paid family of cornelius vanderbilt ii memorial; vanderbilt s father, william h. vanderbilt, had sold site church. magnificent bronze doors, bas-reliefs in panels depicting episodes old , new testaments, carried out of new york s established sculptors: andrew o connor, working freely under general direction of daniel chester french, executed main door; south door executed herbert adams, north door philip martiny.
