swimming career

since started sporting career @ age fifteen, steinegger considered 1 of austria s top female swimmers. achieved more hundred titles @ national championships, , has broken numerous records in freestyle (200, 400, 800, , 1500 m), , medley (100, 200, , 400 m). steinegger made international debut @ 2007 summer universiade in bangkok, thailand, earned bronze medal in 400 m freestyle, posting time @ 4:11.88.


2008 summer olympics

steinegger guaranteed spot on austrian team 2008 summer olympics in beijing, obtaining b-standard entry time of 1:59.17 (200 m freestyle) austrian swimming championships in schwechat. on first day of competition, steinegger challenged 7 other swimmers in second heat of women s 400 m individual medley, including norway s sara nordenstam, won bronze medal in 200 m breaststroke. finished race in fourth place , twenty-sixth overall, nineteen hundredths of second (0.19) behind 18-year-old chinese swimmer liu jing, time of 4:45.15. following morning, steinegger finished fifth , sixteenth overall, on fourth heat of women s 400 m freestyle, time of 4:09.72, approximately 5 seconds behind olympic champions camelia potec of romania , laure manaudou of france.


on third day of competition, steinegger edged out cypriot swimmer anna stylianou second-place sprint in heat 3 of 200 m freestyle, 3 hundredths of second (0.03), clocking @ 2:00.52. in fourth , final event, 800 m freestyle, steinegger challenged 7 other swimmers on second heat, including 16-year-old singaporean swimmer lynette lim , three-time olympian cecilia biagioli of argentina. came in third place , twenty-second overall 2 seconds behind chile s kristel köbrich, posting time @ 8:36.40. although failed advance next round, steinegger broke new austrian records in 4 of respective swimming events.


2009 fina world championships

at 2009 fina world championships in rome, italy, steinegger narrowly missed out of semi-finals in sixth , final heat of women s 400 m freestyle approximately 5 seconds behind potec, lowering austrian record time 4:09.30. in second event, 200 m freestyle, steinegger became first female austrian swimmer swim under 2 minutes, , also, attained record time of 1:59.11 on tenth , final heat, finishing in sixth place , twenty-first overall.


2011 season

at 2011 fina world championships in shanghai, china, steinegger competed in 3 swimming events. first event, 400 m individual medley, steinegger swam in fourth heat against 7 other competitors, including spain s mireia belmonte garcía, china s ye shiwen, , multiple-time olympic medalist kirsty coventry of zimbabwe. came in sixth place , thirteenth overall, 1 tenth of second (0.10) behind slovenia s anja klinar, lowering austrian record time of 4:41.33. having attained olympic qualifying time of 4:41.75, steinegger earned spot on second austrian team olympics. finished twenty-fourth in 200 m individual medley, , thirtieth in 200 m freestyle, failed attain austrian record.


shortly after world championships, steinegger won bronze medal in women s 400 m individual medley @ 2011 summer universiade in shenzhen, china 1 second behind japan s miho takahashi, time of 4:43.30. 3 months later, steinegger captured bronze in same event @ fourth meet of fina world cup series in berlin, germany, time of 4:34.50. @ european short course swimming championships in szczecin, poland, steinegger set short-course austrian record time of 4:33.91, finishing third in preliminary heats of women s 400 m individual medley.


2012 summer olympics

four years after competing in first olympics, steinegger qualified second austrian team, 29-year-old, @ 2012 summer olympics in london, attaining a-standard entry time of 4:41.33 in 400 m individual medley. challenged 7 other swimmers on fourth heat, including great britain s hannah miley, , defending olympic champion stephanie rice of australia. came in last place , twenty-third overall 0.19 of second behind italy s stefania pirozzi, outside austrian record time of 4:45.80. in second event, 200 m freestyle, steinegger raced second heat against 7 other swimmers, including four-time olympians camelia potec of romania (former defending champion in 2004), , hanna-maria seppälä of finland (fourth-place finalist in 100 m freestyle in 2008). finished in sixth place 0.36 of second behind slovakia s katarína filová in 2:02.39. steinegger, however, failed advance semifinals, placed twenty-ninth out of 37 swimmers in preliminary heats.
