shuttleworth became interested in aviation , earned pilot s licence. collected old aircraft, repaired them flight @ workshops @ old warden, bedfordshire , flew them @ air displays. acquired wrecked blériot xi , deperdussin 1910 monoplane local businessman , restored them; blériot world s oldest flying powered aircraft.


when second world war broke out shuttleworth joined royal air force volunteer reserve (rafvr). reached rank of pilot officer , selected join aircraft crash investigation branch once had completed raf flying training, , achieve in august 1940 training no. 12 operational training unit raf @ raf mount farm, oxfordshire. in hours of 2 august 1940 took off in fairey battle light bomber cross-country training exercise, crashed hill @ nearby ewelme , killed.
