in 1889 benedictines established monastery of st. leo , st. leo college on judge edmund f. dunne s former homestead , farm land east of san antonio, florida on shores of lake jovita, later incorporating area part of new town called st. leo. dunne legal counsel involved in disston land purchase of 1881, , commission, received 100,000 choice acres (400 km2) of land out of 4,000,000 acre (16,000 km²) purchase. following year on february 15, while surveying disston purchase cousin, captain hugh dunne, dunne selected area around lake jovita commission , began settling it. first established catholic colony of san antonio in 1882, , later added surrounding villages of saint joseph, saint thomas, villa maria, carmel , san felipe. rural community of saint joseph survives today. area of town of st. leo, although platted village dunne, did not receive name until after arrival of benedictine monks. present name derived pope leo ix.
