career
early career

growing up, gilbert hayes fan of professional wrestling (as mother) , later involved in amateur wrestling , boxing during teenage years. in 1966, after meeting gene kiniski following wrestling event in [winnipeg manitoba], hayes began training in basement of local church year before making professional wrestling debut @ st. boniface club in winnipeg, manitoba.

stampede wrestling

hayes spent 2 years wrestling in winnipeg brief stint in nwa central states before moving calgary-based stampede wrestling during late 1960s. developing following among fans egotistical anti-hero during next several years, teamed bill dromo defeat jerry , bobby christy stampede international tag team championship on february 13, 1970.

successfully defending titles against gordon ivey, mighty ursus , cowboy dan kroffat, , dromo lost titles jerry , bobby christy on march 6. hayes continued facing jerry , bobby christy in tag-team , single matches during next weeks, facing stu hart , bob lueck in tag team match buck jones on march 24, before teaming bob sweetan recapture titles christy brothers on july 3. defeating jerry , bobby christy in later rematches, hayes , sweetan held tag team titles on 2 months before losing them bud , ray osborne on september 4. fighting time limit draw against danny babich on october 30, faced paul peller , bob prire later year.

in 1971, hayes faced bob sweetan in several matches in january , twice teamed jean antone in mixed tag team match against betty niccoli & paul peller in february. teaming danny babich against joe tommaso & ed sullivan, hayes faced buck jones, stomper, quebec giant, dan kroffat , stampede north american champion les thornton, losing him on april 23.

in september, face carlos belafonte, dick medrano , frank butcher before teaming dick medranto against ed sullivan & frank butcher on october 1. fighting draw against earl black on october 9, team john anson against earl black & joe tomasso on october 23 face tag team partner several days later teaming dick medrano , nick pacchiano against anson , sterling gaylord.

he team danny babich later during year although lose stampede international tag team champions chin lee & sugi sito on november 19. , babich continue teaming against sterling gaylord & bob pirie , defeated karl krupp disqualification on december 4, 1971. team bob pringle , gordon ivey in 6-man tag team match losing eddie sullivan, joe tomasso , paul peller later month.

fighting time limit draw against danny babich on february 2, later month teamed bob pringle defeat frank butcher & eddie sullivan , challenged stampede international tag team champions chin lee & sugi sito fighting them double disqualification carlos belafonte on february 19. later have falling out pringle however, defeating him on april 15. after winning tag team titles sonny rogers, hayes face pringle in several tag team matches tiger joe tomasso during next few weeks. on june 24, , tomasso team beautiful bruce in 6-man tag team match losing dave ruhl, geoff portz , les thornton.

during summer of 1972, hayes began wrestling in vancouver-area promoter sandor kovacs. fighting draw against buck ramstead on july 31, face jack bence , eddie morrow in august, fighting draw morrow on august 14. week later, hayes lost 6-man tag team match john quinn , bulldog bob brown against buck ramstead, dutch savage , dean higuchi on august 21.

facing buck ramstead, dean higuchi , tito montez in singles matches during late august , september, later month hayes teamed john quinn defeat duncan mctavish & eddie morrow on september 18. defeating fred barron on september 25, , ray glenn lost buck ramstead & steven little bear on october 2. teaming ray glenn , dan morgan on next several weeks, wrestle last match in promotion losing buck ramstead on october 16.

return calgary

by november, had returned stampede wrestling , began teaming once again tiger joe tomasso winning tag team titles cowboy dan kroffat & lennie hurst later month. facing carlos belafonte, geoff portz , gino caruso in 6-man tag team tomasso , tor kamata in swift current, saskatchewan on november 30, defend titles in rematches against dan kroffat & lennie hurst george gordienko & lindy calder before losing titles michel martel & danny babich on december 15, 1972.

the following year, face dan kroffat once again defeating kroffat & bill cody stampede international tag team titles benny ramirez in july and, following month, defeated him stampede north american heavyweight championship in lethbridge, alberta on august 27. 3 days later however, , ramirez lose tag team titles samoans (afa & sika) on august 31.

feuding on stampede north american heavyweight championship dan kroffat throughout fall, briefly lose title kroffat on october 13 before regaining several weeks later. lose title omar atlas on november 9, 1973.

world wrestling council

from calgary, begin compete outside of canada during mid-1970s , became 1 of first canadians wrestle in puerto rico world wrestling council later becoming first wwc north american heavyweight champion in april 1974. during next several months, promotion in financial trouble, hayes suggested bringing in trained bear opponent defend title against. agreeing idea, match received considerable press coverage , later aired on television hayes defeating victor, wrestling bear in main event on june 29, 1974. hayes wrestle on , off wwc during next several years , defeated jose rivera wwc caribbean heavyweight championship in bayamón, puerto rico on october 21. after losing title chief war cloud on november 25, part company on bad terms.

losing wwc north american heavyweight title carlos colon in caguas, puerto rico following month, enjoyed short stay in championship wrestling florida fighting time limit draw against johnny gray in miami beach, florida on august 21. during next several months, face vic rosettani, tony parisi , dominic denucci before leaving area late november. before returning stampede wrestling in late 1974.

failing defeat stampede international tag team champions pat , mike kelly gordon ivey on december 27, briefly feud ivey facing him in singles match on january 24, 1975. facing former tag team partner benny ramirez following week, began teaming mr. hito facing lindy calder & roy callender on february 7, , mr. hito lose callender , wayne bridges in melville, saskatchewan on april 22. splitting mr. hito time, face frankie laine, keith hart , bill cody before teaming jack pesek against bill cody & nick pacchiano on may 23. team once more pesek against bill cody & keith hart on may 30.

he , mr. hito begin teaming facing larry lane & alo leilani on august 8. dutch savage, , mr. hito face larry lane, bob pringle , keith hart in 6-man tag team match on september 20. later year, win vacant stampede wrestling international tag team titles mr. hito in championship tournament on december 12, 1975. losing titles ed & jerry morrow later month, , mr. hito regain titles once more defeating keith hart & bob pringle in calgary on april 10.

japan

appearing @ event world wide wrestling federation in toronto, ontario on april 25, begin touring japan international wrestling enterprise later year , gypsy joe losing great kusatsu & mighty inoue in 2-of-3 match iwa world tag team championship @ yamato shatai-kogyo gym in kanagawa, japan on december 4, 1976. although gypsy joe scored first fall on mighty inoue, , gypsy joe forfeited second fall via disqualification hayes being pinned inoue take third fall. while in japan, become close friends fellow canadian wrestler archie gouldie.

later career , retirement

returning stampede wrestling in late 1976, began feuding former tag team partner mr. hito facing him on december 26. facing him several times during next month, faced him in no countout/disqualification match on january 2. fighting him no contest @ victoria pavilion in calgary several days later, participate in battle royal later night included leo burke, john foley, gama singh, gypsy joe, mr. hito, ed & jerry morrow, cuban assassins (cuban assassin & bad news allen) , bruce & keith hart. winner receive 1977 pontiac trans am.

during next few weeks, hayes face killer tim brooks, higo hamaguchi, gypsy joe, don gagne and, teaming frenchy lamonte, defeated don gagne & wee willie wilson on march 11. later month, defeat mr. hito , royal kangaroos (jonathan boyd & norman frederick charles iii) in 6-man tag team match keith hart , alo leilani on march 27. failing win stampede international tag team titles fabulous kangaroos keith hart , larry lane in april, faced mr. hito , u.f.o. in single , tag team matches later month. in october, face oki shikuna , kasavudu.

back in calgary end of year, hayes defeated louis laurence on december 29, 1978. 2 days later, participate in 20-man battle royal involving big daddy ritter, mr. hito, dynamite kid, mr. sakurada, norman frederick charles iii, louis laurence, john foley, sandy scott , hart brothers keith, bruce , bret hart. defeating norman frederick charles iii on january 6, face stampede north american heavyweight champion big daddy ritter in several close matches , defeating ritter disqualification on january 26. teaming jim anvil neidhart, defeated ritter , hercules ayala in tag team match on february 9.

facing ritter in 6-man tag team match keith hart , jake snake roberts against ritter, mr. hito & mr. sakurada on march 3, unable defeat ritter championship losing lost ritter in no disqualification match on march 9. , jim neidhart lose mr. hito & mr. sakurada on march 16 and, facing cuban assassin on next several weeks, face him in last match in promotion losing cuban assassin in calgary on march 23, 1979.

less active during next several years, retired active competition in 1981 after blowing out both of knees while touring hawaii. make occasional appearances until late 1985, fighting dan kroffat no contest on december 25 and, 2 days later, losing bruce hart disqualification on december 29, 1985.
