hurley born in mornington, vic , youngest of 3 children. family moved wollongong, nsw attended high school @ illawarra grammar school.

early career

at 2007 junior pan pacific championships in maui, hurley won 2 gold in 4 × 100 m freestyle relay, 4 × 200 m freestyle relay , 1 silver in 200m freestyle. placed 4th in 100m freestyle, 6th in 50m freestyle, , won b final of 400m freestyle.

2008 olympic trials

at 2008 olympic trials in sydney, hurley had few near misses @ making first olympic team. hurley placed 3rd in 400m freestyle behind grant hackett , craig stevens, 4th in 200m backstroke, 5th in 100m backstroke, , 4th in non-selection 50m backstroke.

fina world championships (25m), manchester

at 2008 fina world championships (25m) in manchester, england, hurley competed in 6 events , picked gold medal in 4 × 200 m freestyle relay heat swimmer. placed 8th in 100m backstroke final, , youngest swimmer in field.

at 2009 fina world championships in rome, italy, hurley competed in 5 events , won bronze medal in 4 × 200 m freestyle relay final teammates kenrick monk, tommaso d orsogna , patrick murphy. hurley swam second leg in 1:46.47. australian quartet broke commonwealth , australian records in time of 7:01.65, record still stands. race won in world record time team usa led michael phelps , ryan lochte, closely followed russia. hurley narrowly missed individual finals in 400m (11th) , 800m freestyle events (10th).

at 2009 australian short course championships in hobart, hurley continued short course dominance winning 5 medals, gold in 50m, 100m backstroke , 800m freestyle, , bronze in 200m , 400m freestyle.

at 2010 pan pacific championships in irvine, california, hurley finished 4th in 800m freestyle, 7th in 400m freestyle, , 10th in 1500m freestyle. @ 2010 commonwealth games in delhi, india, hurley suffered food poisoning in athletes village, , missed finals of 400m freestyle.

hurley won 2 gold medals @ 2011 australian short course championships in adelaide, , 2 gold @ 2011 fina world cup.

2012 olympic trials

at 2012 olympic trials in adelaide, hurley finished 3rd in 400m freestyle second consecutive olympic trials, 1 spot short of olympic selection. in 200m freestyle, top 6 selected 4 × 200 m freestyle relay, hurley finished close 7th. hurley finished 6th in 1500m freestyle.

at 2012 australian short course championships in perth, hurley returned sprint backstroke events after two-year layoff, winning 50m , 100m backstroke events, , placing second in 200m freestyle, securing spot on national team compete @ 2012 fina world championships (25m) in istanbul later year.

2013-2016

at 2014 australian championships in brisbane, hurley picked silver medal in 50m backstroke, , placed 5th in 100m backstroke , 8th in 200m backstroke. hurley had overcome chronic elbow pain , numerous cortisone injections able compete.

in may 2014, hurley underwent revolutionary stem cell therapy in both elbows in bid overcome osteoarthritis, followed 4 month break sport. hurley announced move club wolverine out of university of michigan, continue training towards 2016 olympics.

2016 olympic trials

at 2016 australian olympic trials in adelaide, hurley placed 6th in 100m backstroke final , 2nd in non-olympic 50m backstroke final. hurley not selected on australian olympic team.

at 2016 fina world cup, hurley collected 6 gold, 15 silver , 10 bronze medals across first 6 meets, before contracting brachial neuritis in right shoulder , having withdraw rest of tour.

at 2016 australian short course championships in adelaide, hurley swam brachial neuritis nerve injury , famously took 3rd in 50m backstroke without arms, using kick. regathered race 100m backstroke , defeat reigning world champion mitchell larkin take gold.

fina world championships (25m), windsor

at 2016 fina world championships (25m) in windsor, canada, hurley placed 5th in 50m backstroke , 4x50m medley relay, 11th in 100m backstroke, , collected silver medal heat swimmer of 4x100m medley relay.

2017: coaching

hurley moved cape town, south africa, start professional coaching performance manager of chad le clos swimming academy. hurley exclusively coaching cameron van der burgh , danie marais, , co-coaching chad le clos mentor andrea di nino , energy standard international swimming club. le clos picked gold @ 2017 fina world swimming championships in 200m butterfly, , van der burgh bronze in 50m breaststroke in personal best time, , both swimmers swam personal best times @ following fina world cup. marais finished personal best 22nd in 5km open water event.
