Background Armenian presidential election, 2013



armenia s first president levon ter-petrosyan refused run president because of age.


the previous presidential election in armenia held in february 2008. sargsyan announced president 52.8% of popular vote. armenia s first president, levon ter-petrosyan, finished second 21.5%. after results announced, thousands of ter-petrosyan s supporters gathered in yerevan s freedom square protest against electoral fraud. eventually, police , army (allegedly) clashed protesters, resulting in death of ten people (eight protesters , 2 policemen).


less year earlier—in may 2012—armenians voted in parliament election. ruling republican party of armenia of president sargsyan won majority , formed government. besides rpa s close partner rule of law, other 4 parties won seats @ parliament, did not recognize legitimacy of may election. on december 15, 2012, republican party officially nominated serzh sargsyan party candidate. in december 2012, second , third largest parties represented in national assembly announced not nominate candidates, nor support candidates in upcoming election. first on december 12, 2012, prosperous armenia, second largest party in parliament, announced decision, while on december 25, 2012, armenia s first president levon ter-petrosyan announced not participate in upcoming election, thought announced ter-petrosyan candidate of armenian national congress.


on december 26, 2012, armenian revolutionary federation announced decision not nominate candidate. thus, 3 major non-government parties—the arf, anc , pap—did not participate in election.
