the karaiskakis stadium (greek: Στάδιο Γεώργιος Καραϊσκάκης), situated @ faliro area of piraeus, greece, traditional , current home ground of olympiacos. named after georgios karaiskakis, national hero of greek war of independence, hosts olympiacos home matches of club s history.


it built in 1895 velodrome host cycling events 1896 summer olympics in athens. official name neo phaliron velodrome (greek: Ποδηλατοδρόμιο Νέου Φαλήρου) , pitch covered curm. olympiacos started using since foundation in 1925. in 1964, stadium renovated, taking current name , shape had until 2003, athletics track around pitch. being 1 of important sport venues in greece, hosted 1969 european athletics championships , 1971 european cup winners cup final between chelsea , real madrid.


olympiacos left karaiskakis stadium temporarily, play home games @ newly built athens olympic stadium, in 1984. after five-year use of biggest stadium in greece, team returned traditional home, played until 1997. olympiacos got athens olympic stadium, stayed period of 5 years. in 2002, olympic stadium closed renovation works due 2004 summer olympics , olympiacos moved georgios kamaras stadium in rizoupoli, home of apollon smyrnis, following 2 seasons.


the karaiskakis stadium had fallen in disrepair , use passed olympiacos in april 2003; club took responsibility build new football-only ground in place, used football tournament of 2004 olympics. in return, olympiacos got exclusive use of stadium until 2052, covering maintenance costs , paying 15% of revenue state. old stadium demolished in spring of 2003 , whole project constructed in record period of 14 months. completed on 30 june 2004 @ total cost of €60 million. nowadays, karaiskakis stadium 1 of modern football grounds in europe, hosting museum of olympiacos , several facilities around.
