Denali expedition Robert Tatum

episcopalian archdeacon hudson stuck, later become expedition leader, first met tatum during regular visit mission school. stuck asked tatum if join him in ascending denali (mount mckinley) first time; accepted. in preparation climb, tatum hiked 1,200 miles (1,900 km), including trip tanana crossing other missionaries establish new mission.
on march 17, 1913, expedition left nenana climb mckinley. besides stuck , tatum (who cook), party consisted of harry peter karstens, led expedition stuck; walter harper, alaska native had been stuck s travelling companion 3 years; , 2 gwich in teenagers, johnny fredson , esaias george, helped @ base camp , brought dog teams down before summit.
on june 6, arrived @ final camp after 3 months of dangerous climbing.
early next morning, party set off reach summit. around noon, reached top of mount mckinley, @ elevation of 20,310 feet (6,190 m). during hour , half spent on summit, tatum planted flag had made earlier out of handkerchiefs , other miscellaneous items. compared view looking out of window of heaven. began descent, took 2 days base camp. returned tanana on june 20, on 3 months since left.
