before pendulum, rob swire , gareth mcgrillen in multiple rock , metal music bands before swire influenced mcgrillen producing electronic music on computers. harding had been drummer in punk band since mid 1990s. both bands had played @ same shows, did not meet until drum , bass night in 2002. had passion electronic music , formed pendulum, incorporating previous influences of rock , metal music previous projects.


pendulum began career in perth, western australia trio of djs. harding had been active in perth drum , bass scene time, djing under name el hornet . swire , mcgrillen had played friends parties, djing computers. swire , mcgrillen wanted start record label , release songs on it. 1 evening meant play dj set on perth producers night @ drumclub, swire s hard drive failed. harding offered play music instead received well. sat down each other , decided produce music under name pendulum.


the first track trio produced vault , released in 2003 on 31 records great acclaim within uk drum , bass scene. @ moment residing in perth, felt isolated drum , bass community. once fellow drum , bass artist dj fresh offered them free accommodation in london flat 8 months, decided move england.


the band recorded , released spiral / ulterior motive same year, , in 2004 made first compilation appearance on jungle sound: bassline strikes back! , several songs featured , harding in charge of mixing album s second disc. band offered album deal breakbeat kaos, fresh label, resulted in debut album hold colour in 2005. album charted in both united kingdom , in australia , certified golden album in australia.


following success of 2005 debut album, label breakbeat kaos re-issued compilation under name jungle sound gold, front saying mixed pendulum . band disapproved of had neither given permission nor been informed release, , pendulum later ended leaving label.


in 2006, trio became sextet after introducing ben mount mc, peredur ap gwynedd guitarist , paul kodish drummer. @ time mcgrillen began playing bass guitar @ live shows , on studio recordings.
