formed heavy bombardment squadron in january 1942, trained in pacific northwest under second air force, boeing b-17 flying fortresses. reassigned seventh air force in hawaii, november 1942 , performed performing search , rescue , antisubmarine patrols until january 1943 while transitioning long-range consolidated b-24 liberator heavy bombers.


deployed central pacific hawaii throughout 1943 long-range combat bombardment operations against japanese forces in central pacific; new guinea; northern solomon islands , eastern mandates campaigns. deployed new hebrides in melanesia , operated numerous temporary jungle airfields, engaging in long-range bombardment operations during bismarck archipelago; western pacific; leyte; luzon , southern philippines campaigns until end of war in august 1945. assigned clark field, philippines after war ended, demobilized personnel returning united states, unit inactivated paper unit in january 1946 in california.

during korean war, tactical air command (tac) trained aircrews @ langley air force base, virginia. 3 squadrons of 4400th combat crew training group performing mission air national guard (ang) units had been called war. @ start of 1953, these squadrons returned state control , 424d bombardment squadron took on mission, personnel, , equipment of 122d bombardment squadron of louisiana ang. in january 1954, group mission shifted tactical bombardment , redesignated 4400th bombardment group. group began anticipate transition martin b-57 canberra aircraft, tac decided replace table of distribution 4400th group , squadrons regular 345th bombardment group, took on mission in july 1954.


the squadron activated in 1958 @ lincoln air force base, nebraska. squadron began sending aircraft amarc @ davis-monthan in late 1961, , squadron went non-operational. inactivated on 1 january 1962.

the sovereign building in 2011 the whitehall mall store sold leh s department store, several years flagship store on hamilton street in allentown remained vacant. added national register of historic places in 1979. in december 1982 allentown store purchased sovereign realty , development. building renovated , reopened sovereign building in may 1984. renovations included glass-arched entrance pedestrian plaza between hamilton , court streets leading grapefruit-domed lobby decor of antique brass, mirrors, greenery , wing-backed chairs. main floor , basement developed retail spaces, while upper floors turned 42 private office suites. sovereign later went financial difficulties , building sold @ sheriffs sale on 22 september 1989. today building operated office building owner resides in philadelphia.
