formed heavy bombardment squadron in january 1942, trained in pacific northwest under second air force, boeing b-17 flying fortresses. reassigned seventh air force in hawaii, november 1942 , performed performing search , rescue , antisubmarine patrols until january 1943 while transitioning long-range consolidated b-24 liberator heavy bombers.


deployed central pacific hawaii throughout 1943 long-range combat bombardment operations against japanese forces in central pacific; new guinea; northern solomon islands , eastern mandates campaigns. deployed new hebrides in melanesia , operated numerous temporary jungle airfields, engaging in long-range bombardment operations during bismarck archipelago; western pacific; leyte; luzon , southern philippines campaigns until end of war in august 1945. assigned clark field, philippines after war ended, demobilized personnel returning united states, unit inactivated paper unit in january 1946 in california.
