govan , men participated in battle of shiloh in april 1862. following shiloh, govan took part in edmund kirby smith s kentucky campaign , fought @ battle of perryville in october. @ 1 point during battle govan temporarily commanded brigade. fought @ battle of stones river winter , @ battle of chickamauga in september 1863. govan led brigade in reserve corps of army of tennessee august november. during battle of missionary ridge govan played prominent role in battle of ringgold gap, receiving high praise commander, maj. gen. patrick cleburne.
on december 29, 1863, govan promoted rank of brigadier general. command consisting of 5th, 6th, 7th, , 8th arkansas infantry regiments. govan s brigade participated in atlanta campaign, , received particular mention conduct @ battle of pickett s mill in may 1864. govan captured after fierce battle @ battle of jonesborough on september 1, exchanged george stoneman on october 2.
govan served remainder of war army of tennessee, participating in franklin-nashville campaign , carolinas campaign. wounded in throat on december 16 @ nashville. govan surrendered in 1865 gen. joseph e. johnston @ greensboro, north carolina. paroled there on may 1 , pardoned u.s. government on december 12.
