wylex plug

george h. scholes ltd. of manchester first introduced plugs hollow round earth pin between rectangular current-carrying pins in 1926 under wylex brand name, prior first british standard earthed plugs. wylex plugs made in 3 ratings, 5 a, 10 a , 15 a , unpolarized (the current carrying pins on same centre line earth pin). in 1933 asymmetric polarized version introduced, line pin offset centre line. in 1934 dual plug system introduced socket rated @ 15 a , 3 sizes of plug, fused 2 a , 5 a plugs , 15 a plug. 15 a dual plug incorporated socket narrower apertures standard wylex 15 a socket, accepted narrow rectangular pins of lower-rated plugs. introduction of 13 a fused plug, rated 3 kw., enabled scholes propose system possible solution new standard competing dorman & smith round pin solution, not selected , new bs 1363 design prevailed. wylex sockets used in council housing , public sector buildings and, short time in private housing. particularly popular in manchester area although installed throughout england, in schools, university accommodation, , government laboratories. in london schools built in 1960s used low-voltage ac sockets, typically 12 v, 5 a transformer serving 1 or more laboratories, microscope lamps etc. wylex plugs , sockets continued manufactured several years after bs 1363 sockets became standard, , commonly used banks , in computer rooms during 1960s , 1970s uninterruptible power supplies or clean filtered mains supplies.

made dorman & smith ltd. (using patents applied in 1943) plugs , sockets rated @ 13 a , 1 of competing types use on ring final circuits. never popular in private houses deployed in prefabricated houses , council housing. bbc used them. local authorities continued use them in new installations until late 1950s. many d&s sockets still in use until 1980s, although difficulty in obtaining plugs them after around 1970 forced users replace them bs 1363 sockets. d&s plug suffered serious design fault: line pin fuse screwed plug body , tended come unscrewed on own in use. fuse worked loose end protruding socket, electrically live , posing shock hazard, when plug removed.
