description

mitchell railway station located on oxford street, on western edge of mitchell township. buildings , structures of cultural heritage significance include passenger station (c. 1910 moved station c. 1933) goods shed (1884-1885 substantial later modifications) , station master s house (1884). passenger station located on southern side of railway tracks , faces oxford street. goods shed opposite passenger station on northern side of tracks. on 100 metres away these structures towards north, station master s house located on separate allotment accessed ann road.

the passenger station narrow building, timber-framed , clad in weatherboards, set on concrete stumps. has gabled roof of corrugated iron. small extension south west of building has skillion roof.


the south eastern elevation of building faces road. set of double, framed , boarded doors provide access through elevation. these open out onto small loading platform , give access store room @ south western end of building. 4 timber framed, vertical sliding windows distributed along elevation east of doors. fifth window opening lavatory @ north eastern end louvred.


the ends of building each provided single window. vertical sliding window located in centre of north eastern end , small louvered window fitted in middle of other end near top.


the platform extends along length of north western elevation. series of doors , openings give access onto platform. waiting room enclosed on 3 sides only. fourth side open platform , forms largest opening on platform elevation. single doors provide access records room , male lavatory, 2 single doors open station office , double door opens store. exception of door male lavatory, single doors paneled, top panels of doors office glassed. double doors store framed , boarded. 2 vertical sliding windows open office. access women s lavatory via single door waiting shed.


the roof of building extends on platform. series of horizontal timber members extend wall out rafters on platform. space between members , rafters in-filled vertical slats. short straight timber brackets extend mid-point of horizontal member down wall @ angle of approximately 45°.


with exception of store room , men s lavatory, internal rooms of station lined. women s lavatory, store room , waiting shed @ north eastern end lined vertical boards , office fibro or plaster board. timber benches fixed 2 of walls in waiting shed.


goods shed

the goods shed large timber framed structure, clad in corrugated iron. has gabled roof wide eaves. on north western elevation, 2 large ledge , brace sliding doors provide road transport access internal loading bay. raised timber platform fills of interior of shed. concrete floored loading bay section of floor @ ground level. outside shed on south eastern side, raised timber platform runs along rail tracks full length of elevation. 2 large ledge , brace timber sliding doors open onto platform.


station master s house

the station master s house timber-framed building clad weatherboards, sitting on short concrete stumps. comprises l-shaped, five-roomed core central hallway; separately roofed, semi-detached kitchen; , later skillion-roofed laundry along southwest side, between kitchen , main house, resting on concrete slab. roofs clad corrugated galvanised iron.


the core of house has gabled roof on front 4 rooms hipped roof extending @ of house along northeast side, accommodate fifth room , passage leading kitchen. there separately roofed verandahs front , sides of core. these have two-rail balustrade , simple timber brackets verandah posts. verandah along southwest side has been enclosed @ later date accommodate bathroom , toilet.


the north western elevation front of house. access gained verandah via short, centrally positioned staircase opposite four-paneled front door. on either side of front door double-hung sash window 4 lights.


the northeastern verandah roof extended skillion, approximately 1 metre wide, running full length of elevation. extended roof supported series of horizontal members extending verandah posts out rafters. short straight timber brackets extend mid-point of each horizontal member down posts @ angle of approximately 45°. space between members , rafters in-filled vertical slats. 2 double-hung sash windows , set of french doors (which open rear bedroom) spaced evenly along elevation.


the kitchen @ rear of house has projecting stove recess, clad curved corrugated iron, in south west elevation. rear access house gained through door in centre of south east elevation of kitchen building. approach door via short staircase running parallel wall , ending on small landing covered skillion roof. there double-hung sash window 4 lights right of door , single set of later louvres left of door. corrugated iron tank on tank-stand located adjacent north eastern end of kitchen.


the interior linings , fittings of house appear of recent origin. in laundry, north eastern interior wall (formerly external wall of house) clad in weatherboards. kitchen fitted built-in cupboards, sink , stove of recent origin, there wood stove in iron stove recess.


the house located on separate allotment rest of station buildings. weld-mesh fence encloses block. allotment bare of vegetation except assortment of small shrubs , trees growing @ rear of block. steel carport , garden shed of recent origin located south west of house. these not considered of cultural heritage significance.
