the sprinter concept dates 1989, when public transport corporation, having seen substantial increase in patronage , reduction in costs following introduction of faster, more frequent services part of new deal country passengers program of 1980s, required additional train capacity meet demand. tenders construction of 22 railcars closed in november 1989.


at time designed supplement locomotive-hauled h type carriage sets on shorter runs (such on outer suburban melton , sunbury lines, interurban geelong , seymour lines) , provide faster , more frequent service melbourne s fringe areas, , indirectly (primarily freeing other rollingstock) more distant regions. introduction enabled retirement of 4 drc railcars service.
