the story of italian engineer , circus strongman giovanni belzoni became unlikely egyptologist world has ever seen, intercut flashbacks life of ramses great, in footsteps belzoni continually stray.


episode three: pharaoh , showman

a dissatisfied belzoni leaves england wife, sarah, , servant, james curtin, see world. finding destitute in streets of cairo after work on irrigation project falls through rescued eccentric john lewis bukhardt introduces them british consul henry salt. belzoni hired recover massive head of memnon, later revealed statue of pharaoh ramesses great, gift british museum. arriving in luxor in 1816 amidst gold rush of black market antiquities dealers belzoni finds himself unwelcome.

belzoni, arriving in cairo, informed salt head sent british museum while rest of antiquities has collected kept @ consulate. salt refuses fund excavation @ abu simbal , belzoni sent south again salt s secretary william beechey , local dealer called yanni. belzoni, whilst becalmed @ minya. spots yenni talking french rival drovetti , hastily rides luxor determined there first. arriving late belzoni discovers entire area licensed drovetti , must dig elsewhere.


belzoni, guided image of ramesses, digs in unlicensed area , discovers preserved bust. infuriated drovetti has local ruler issue edict against belzoni. no other option belzoni heads south island of philae collect antiquities has stored there discover upon arrival french have ransacked them. funds arrive salt begin evcavation @ abu simbal , belzoni heads site 2 british royal navy officers. work progresses in shifting desert until belzoni devises plan build palisade hold sand. entrance uncovered group cautiously enter view magnificent interior. belzoni records every detail of temple decorations, celebrate capture of kadesh made ramesses great warrior king. in luxor belzoni, reunited sarah , jim, threatened drevetti undeterred heads deep western hills enters valley of kings. belzoni learns yanni , beechey salt selling off antiquities collects rather donating them british museum.
