early years

born in bonheiden, belgium, nys began racing bmx @ age of 8. won 8 bmx national titles before switching cyclocross, more popular sport in belgium. won under-23 world championship in 1997 , 1998, beating belgian, bart wellens. nys moved elite category in 1998–1999, joining dutch rabobank team.


becoming elite

in élite class won superprestige competition , came third in national championships. next season, won superprestige again, ended world cup leader , became belgian champion. made him favourite 2000 world championship. rabobank management told him not beat team-mate, dutchman richard groenendaal. groenendaal sprinted away start , nys forced hold , not belgian, mario de clercq, chase him. groenendaal won , nys, came third, criticised in belgium choosing team on country. royal belgian cycling league demanded explanation. became more forgiving head coach, erik de vlaeminck, remained unconvinced.


nys blamed injury not winning season-long competition or championship in 2000–2001. year later won world cup , superprestige again. in world championships year came third after being outsprinted de clercq , tom vannoppen. following season nys won superprestige fourth time gazet van antwerpen trophy first time. became belgian champion again, wellens won world championship , world cup.


wellens dominated 2003–2004. nys chance world cup ended when other belgians sprinted past him, taking points. nys angry countrymen had allowed groenendaal, dutchman, win world cup rather him. evening nys decided on ride himself.

the following season, nys won world cup, superprestige , gazet van anterwerpen trophy again. won fifth national championship. dutchman lars boom became champion of world , zdeněk Štybar took silver, both barely 22 @ time. nys, nearing 32, came third.

nys switched teams rabobank landbouwkrediet-tönissteiner. niels albert, 2008 s u23 world champion, joined elite category season, giving nys opponent. nys won season-long competitions , national championship. albert won world championship, Štybar second , nys third. belgian press referred albert, Štybar , nys de grote drie (the big three), clear nys years of absolute domination behind him.


in second mountain bike race nys won belgian championship , came ninth @ olympic games in 2008. on 31 december 2006 nys won 150th race elites, @ diegem. 4 years later, scored 300th career win @ koppenbergcross, 1 of toughest races in season.


nys appointed member of inaugural uci athletes commission in 2011.


in 2013 nys won world championship second time. said career complete.


on 10 february 2013, nys won 60th race in superprestige.


on 22 november 2015, nys won koksijde round of uci cyclo-cross world cup in belgium, fiftieth victory in series. win came seventeen years , day after first world cup victory.


sven nys called halt career on 5–6 march 2016 @ event called merci sven held @ antwerp sportpaleis (belgium).

after ending active cyclocross career nys bought cyclocross team telenet–fidea lions of general manager.

the sovereign building in 2011 the whitehall mall store sold leh s department store, several years flagship store on hamilton street in allentown remained vacant. added national register of historic places in 1979. in december 1982 allentown store purchased sovereign realty , development. building renovated , reopened sovereign building in may 1984. renovations included glass-arched entrance pedestrian plaza between hamilton , court streets leading grapefruit-domed lobby decor of antique brass, mirrors, greenery , wing-backed chairs. main floor , basement developed retail spaces, while upper floors turned 42 private office suites. sovereign later went financial difficulties , building sold @ sheriffs sale on 22 september 1989. today building operated office building owner resides in philadelphia.
