first generation (2008–2017)

the insignia debuted @ 2008 british international motor show in london on 23 july opel/vauxhall insignia. reflected vauxhall brand unique united kingdom. went on sale in european dealerships in october 2008 5 door hatchback, 4 door saloon, , 5 door estate, dubbed sports tourer – departure opel traditionally used caravan name denote estate bodystyle. insignia first production car based on epsilon ii platform, used on other models such 2010 saab 9-5 , chevrolet malibu.

the insignia first car debut new badges both opel , vauxhall brands, , vauxhall, first car dispense characteristic v grille has adorned vauxhall models since 1994, differentiated them otherwise identical opel models.

the insignia first opel debut many new , improved safety features, including:

(an improved) adaptive forward lighting – bi-xenon, gas discharge headlamps variable light beam distribution in width, direction , range. advanced front-lighting system (afs), static cornering light, complemented daytime running lights leds. sensors , software monitor surroundings, traffic , weather conditions system can activate appropriate lighting function.

despite global presence, opel insignia has never been sold in japan, opel had withdrawn japanese market before launching model.

design wise, insignia offers 30 mm (1.2 in) more knee room vectra. saloon , hatchback variants have same 4.83 m (190.2 in) length , wheelbase of 2.73 m (107.5 in). estate version longer @ 4.91 m (193.3 in) on same wheelbase.

opc

in beginning of 2009, opel revealed insignia opc, high performance variant of insignia. preceding vectra opc, powered 2.8 litre turbocharged v6 (manufactured in melbourne, australia).

the updated engine makes 239 kilowatts (325 ps; 321 hp) , 435 newton metres (321 lb·ft). of 435, 400 newton metres (300 lb·ft) available 2,000 rpm. paired 6 speed manual transmission / six-speed automatic transmission , saab s (haldex) active wheel drive system. insignia opc has modified macpherson strut front suspension called hiperstrut reduces torque steer.

also standard electronic limited slip differential rear wheels , opel s flexride adaptive suspension, has 3 settings (opc, sport, , normal). opc version of insignia sports tourer wagon has been unveiled , on sale. in april 2011, opel launched insignia opc unlimited, no speed limiter.

country tourer

the opel insignia country tourer made world premiere @ frankfurt motor show in september 2013: country tourer s main competitors volkswagen passat alltrack , audi a4 allroad, , Škoda octavia scout.

facelift

a major facelift introduced in june 2013, new exterior , interior styling, new engines, , new safety features. car officially premiered @ september 2013 frankfurt motor show, before going on sale later in 2013.

the new design includes newly designed cockpit simplified control panel , 2 8 inch colour displays, 4 way infotainment system via new touchpad in centre console, 8 inch touchscreen, steering wheel controls, voice command, radar , camera based driver assistance , safety systems, such full speed adaptive cruise control , imminent collision braking, rear camera, lane change assistance, blind spot alert, , rear cross traffic alert.

the second generation insignia revealed in december 2016, , reported renamed insignia grand sport.

engines
2008–2013

from launch, insignia offered 4 petrol engines – 1.6 l 115 ps (85 kw; 113 hp), 1.8 l 140 ps (103 kw; 138 hp), 2.0 l turbo 220 ps (162 kw; 217 hp), , 2.8 l v6 260 ps (191 kw; 256 hp) – , 3 diesel engines (all derived fiat/gm jtd engine) – 2.0 litres 110 ps (81 kw; 108 hp), 130 ps (96 kw; 128 hp) , 160 ps (118 kw; 158 hp). in 2009, 1.6 l turbo petrol 180 ps (132 kw; 178 hp), ecoflex diesels, , opc versions introduced.

from september 2010, 2.0 cdti diesel engine gained adaptive 4x4 option. 2.0 biturbo cdti, 195 ps (143 kw; 192 hp), in development saab, expected begin production in 2010, due sale of saab, production delayed , began production in 2012, 2wd (fwd) , 4wd.

all engines have 6 speed manual transmission standard, engines having automatic transmission option.

since launch, diesels have improved emissions. in 2011, engines gained start/stop, diesel engines have option, more petrol engines expected gain technology in future. 1.4 turbo 140 ps (103 kw; 138 hp), s/s standard, available, replacing 1.8, , 2.0 turbo upgraded 250 ps (184 kw; 247 hp) 4 wheel drive. 2.0 turbo 220 ps (162 kw; 217 hp) remains fwd.

in 2009, new range of ecoflex diesel engine offered same amount of power, less co2-emission (g/km) , fuel consumption. 2.0 cdti ecoflex 130 ps (96 kw; 128 hp) , 160 ps (118 kw; 158 hp) have emission of 114 co2-emission (g/km), version 2.0 cdti 4x4. 195 ps (143 kw; 192 hp) bi turbo diesel engine has 129 co2-emission (g/km).

2013–2017

alongside facelift of 2013 came new range of engines – existing, tweaked, , brand new. diesel engines available @ launch include 2.0 cdti ecoflex (also start/stop), outputs of 120 ps, 140 ps, , 163 ps , existing 195 ps biturbo. there non ecoflex engine 130 ps available automatic transmission. petrol engines include existing 1.4 turbo , 1.8 (only on markets), , new 1.6 sidi turbo engine introduced in cascada, , new 2.0 sidi turbo.

all engines come 6 speed manual gearbox standard, 6 speed automatic available option on 1.6 , 2.0 sidi turbo petrol engines, , 2.0 cdti 163 ps , 195 ps diesel engines. petrol , diesel engines have start/stop system except 2.0 cdti 130 ps.

in september 2014, opel introduced new generation of engines – large diesel engine, starting 2.0 cdti engine 170 ps , 400 nm, part of new strategy in opel introduce 17 new engines in period 2014 2018. new engine became available end of 2014/beginning of 2015.

production , sales

production started @ end of 2008 on major markets in europe. @ launch, vauxhall versions produced in exclusiv, s, se, sri, elite, , vxr specification levels. popular choice british buyers, being nation s ninth best selling car in 2009 – first full year on sale, outselling direct competitor ford mondeo, falling short of sales achieved more upmarket bmw 3 series.

at beginning several trim levels: essentia, edition, sport, cosmo, opc, , later business edition, selection, active, 150 years of opel, innovation depending on market.

by august 2011, on 400,000 insignias had been sold, , on april 26, 2012, 500,000th insignia produced.
