in part because of success of spring 1974 indoor tour red army team nasl decided hold indoor tournament of own. of 20 franchises in league, 16 participated. teams separated 4 regional groups of four. bayfront center in st. petersburg, florida chosen 1 of regional venues, rowdies hosts region 3. san jose earthquakes given honor of hosting championship semifinals , finals @ cow palace.

the winner of region 3 gain automatic place in championship tournament 4 weeks later in california. in first tournament game rowdies had no trouble washington diplomats, winning score of 7–2. 2 nights later tampa bay had tougher task in coming behind defeat baltimore comets, 8–6. 2 victories left rowdies tied miami toros in standings, tie-breaker goal differential. tampa bay’s plus 7 goal margin narrowly edged out toros’ plus-6, , rowdies advanced. ringo cantillo named mvp of region, edging out miami’s nico bodonczy 1 vote.

tampa bay paired new york cosmos in semifinals, while other semifinal had san jose clashing dallas tornado. led doug wark’s record six-goal performance, rowdies jumped out 3–0 lead, , never looked back, dispatched cosmos, 13–5, advance final on sunday.


on march 16, 1975, tampa bay faced heavily favored san jose earthquakes team in rowdies first of many championship finals, against. score 6–1 @ end of first period, , 8,618 fans behind them, san jose showed why tabbed win tournament. there home team cruised 8–5 victory. in addition rowdies’ runner-up performance, doug wark named all-tournament squad , second leading scorer in tournament.
