the fudai sakai clan originated in 14th century mikawa province. claim descent minamoto no arichika. arichika had 2 sons; 1 of them, yasuchika, took name of matsudaira, while other son, chikauji, took name of sakai. chikauji ancestor of sakai clan. sakai hirochika, chikauji s son, had 2 sons well, , descendants of these 2 sons gave rise 2 principal branches of clan. senior branch founded sakai tadatsugu (1527–1596). tadatsugu, vassal of tokugawa ieyasu, charged defense of yoshida castle in mikawa province. in 1578, sakai ietsugu (1564–1619) succeeded father s role defender of yoshida castle. ie- in beginning of ietsugu s name special honor bestowed tokugawa ieyasu, intended emphasize bonds of loyalty allowed share in part of name. when ieyasu s holdings transferred kantō region in 1590, ietsugu installed @ usui domain (30,000 koku) in kōzuke province, but, in 1604, moved takasaki domain (50,000 koku). in 1616, again moved takada domain (100,000 koku), time in echigo province. in 1619, moved matsushiro domain in shinano province; , then, 1622 1868, installed @ tsuruoka domain (120,000 koku) in dewa province. sakai of tsuruoka (which later grew 170,000 koku) in dewa province prominent in late edo period military power. charged safety of edo, patrons of shinchogumi police force, , effective in duties. following surrender of edo, sakai withdrew , returned north domain, active in northern theater of boshin war, becoming signatories pact created Ōuetsu reppan dōmei in 1868. head of clan line ennobled count in meiji period.


a cadet branch created in 1647. these sakai installed 1647 through 1868 @ matsumine domain (20,000 koku) in dewa province; castle @ matsumine constructed in 1779. head of clan line ennobled viscount in meiji period.


another cadet branch founded sakai masachika (+1576). vassal of tokugawa – tokugawa nobutada, tokugawa kiyoyasu , tokugawa hirotada. in 1561, installed @ nishio castle in mikawa province, , security of castle confided in him. in 1590, sakai shigetada, son of masachika, received kawagoe domain (15,000 koku) in musashi province; in 1601, installed @ umayabashi domain (35,000 koku) in kōzuke province.


in 1749, descendants of sakai tadakiyo (1626–1681) transferred himeji domain (150,000 koku) in harima province ; , remained daimyō @ himeji until meiji period. cadet branch of sakai had been created in 1590. head of clan line first ennobled count , in meiji period.


yet cadet branch of sakai had been created in 1668, these sakai installed 1668 through 1868 @ katsuyama domain (12,000 koku) in awa province. head of clan line ennobled viscount in meiji period.


a further cadet branch of sakai had been created in 1681, these sakai installed in 1681 through 1868 @ isezaki domain (20,000 koku) in kōzuke province. head of clan line ennobled viscount in meiji period.


sakai tadatoshi (1562–1627) received fief of tanaka domain (10,000 koku) in suruga province in 1601; holding transferred in 1609 kawagoe domain (30,000 koku) in musashi province.


sakai tadakatsu (1587–1662) installed in 1634 through 1868 @ obama domain (103,500 koku) in wakasa province . cadet branch of sakai had been created in 1590. head of clan line ennobled count in meiji period.


finally, cadet branch of sakai had been created in 1682. these sakai installed in 1682 through 1868 @ tsuruga domain (10,000 koku) in echizen province. head of clan line ennobled viscount in meiji period.
