First attack Warrington bomb attacks

on night of 25 february 1984, 3 ira members planted bombs @ gas holders on winwick road, warrington. @ 11:45 pm night, police officer stopped 3 men in van on sankey street. questioning them, ira members shot him 3 times , sped off in van. hour later hijacked car in lymm, put driver in boot , drove off towards manchester. @ 1 police spotted car , chased along m62 motorway in direction of warrington. shots fired during high-speed chase , 2 police vehicles hit. police stopped car on motorway near croft , arrested 2 of ira members: páidric macfhloinn (age 40) , denis kinsella (age 25). third member, michael timmins, escaped. @ 4:10 on 26 february bombs exploded @ gas holders, sending fireball 1,000 feet (300 m) sky , causing extensive damage facility. emergency services arrived , evacuated 100 people homes. there disruption transport morning police set roadblocks , trains diverted away warrington.


in 1994, macfhloinn sentenced 35 years in prison , kinsella 25 years part in bombing. john kinsella (age 49) sentenced 20 years possessing semtex explosives had hidden ira unit.
