valentine collins joined royal flying corps in october 1916. served rfc special reserve. posted first no. 45 squadron, injured on 29 november 1916. in 1917, served no. 48 squadron in france, before return france in december 1917. after 1 april 1918 merger of royal flying corps royal naval air service, served no. 22 squadron of royal air force. lieutenant collins credited ten aerial victories, observer. first 3 no. 48 squadron of royal flying corps , next 7 no. 22 squadron of royal air force. collins scored of victories bristol f.2b, two-seat biplane fighter , reconnaissance aircraft, known bristol fighter.


each of first 3 scores against albatros d.v, bristol f.2b piloted australian second lieutenant william dowling bostock. pilot bostock went on become air vice marshal, senior commander in royal australian air force, onset of world war ii. collins first victory occurred on 4 september 1917 bristol f.2b serial number a7224, piloted bostock. opponent s aircraft sent out of control on middelkerke , ostend, both in west flanders, belgium. on 27 september 1917, collins scored double victory on pervijze, west flanders, again in bristol fighter piloted bostock. 1 opponent s albatros d.v destroyed, , 15 minutes later s sent out of control.


collins did not have kill until june of next year, member of no. 22 squadron of royal air force. on 28 june 1918, bristol f.2b (c989) piloted lieutenant frank george gibbons, flying ace credited 14 aerial victories, destroyed fokker dr.i, single-seat triplane fighter, north of estaires, nord, france. following month, on 10 july 1918, same bristol fighter piloted gibbons sent fokker dr.i out of control on lille, nord, france.


all of aviator s remaining 5 victories in aircraft piloted lieutenant leslie walter king, flying ace credited 9 aerial victories. on 8 august 1918, collins scored sixth victory, bristol f.2b (d7894) piloted king, when pfalz d.iii sent out of control south of douai, nord, france. 2 days later, same bristol fighter piloted king, collins destroyed 2 fokker d.vii aircraft southwest of péronne, france. on 21 august 1918, collins scored ninth victory on albert , cambrai, nord, france. bristol f.2b (e2454) piloted again king sent fokker d.vii out of control. tenth , last victory occurred on 27 august 1918. bristol f.2b piloted lieutenant king defeated fokker d.vii sent out of control on senlemont.
