History Carlton Hill (Erie Railroad station)

during 1950s , 1960s, several different priorities different agencies around cities of paterson , passaic beginning form. delaware, lackawanna , western, competing railroad erie, wanted condense (along erie) services , share trackage because of financial troubles. secondly, city officials in passaic had first brought proposal erie asking removal of main line through city, tying traffic in city during station stops. this, however, not implemented during 1950s, proposed. instead, erie reconstructed stations @ passaic , clifton. third, new jersey state highway department needed rights-of-way interstate 80 through paterson , state route 21 through passaic (right passaic park station , drawbridge located).


after merge on october 17, 1960, between delaware, lackawanna , western , erie, city officials in passaic once again brought possibility of removing tracks through main street, passaic. time, newly formed erie–lackawanna went forward it, beginning process move main line onto former boonton branch , newark branch through lyndhurst, passaic , clifton. main line abandoned past carlton hill, , drawbridge swung in open position, , put sale price of $0.00 in 1964 mayor of passaic.

after abandonment of erie railroad s main line through city of passaic, two-tracked stub rutherford , bergen junction westward through carlton hill remained in service carlton hill branch. alignment received of deadhead trains, there limited set of carlton hill – rutherford – hoboken trains, making 2 stops. in october 1966, along newark branch , spur of new york & greenwood lake wanaque, carlton hill branch service discontinued , station no longer received passenger trains. station building later demolished, , tracks , asphalt platform remain date @ jackson avenue. company retains ownership.
