jazz pianist fats waller wrote many of jazz standards, including squeeze me (1925), ain t misbehavin (1929) , honeysuckle rose (1929).



1924 – loves baby song composed spencer williams lyrics jack palmer. introduced clarence williams , blue five, louis armstrong on trumpet. armstrong recorded song fletcher henderson orchestra later in 1924; take marked armstrong s first vocal recording. song known loves baby, baby don t love nobody me .
1924 – hard hearted hannah (the vamp of savannah) song composed milton ager lyrics charles bates, bob bigelow , jack yellen. introduced frances williams in broadway musical innocent eyes. hit recordings made dolly kay, margaret young , herb wiedoeft , orchestra. ella fitzgerald sang in 1955 film pete kelly s blues.
1924 – how come me do? song vaudeville duo gene austin , roy bergere. became popular in 1924 recordings of blues singers rosa henderson , viola mccoy. marion harris recorded hit version in 1924. song enjoyed revival in 1954 after bill krenz s recording.
1924 – king porter stomp ragtime composition jelly roll morton, recorded piano solo. lyrics later added sonny burke , sid robin. morton claimed have written tune in 1902. named after pianist porter king, , there rumor morton consulted ragtime pianist scott joplin composition. became hit when benny goodman , orchestra recorded fletcher henderson s arrangement of in 1935. chord progression first strain has been used in numerous other jazz compositions , commonly known stomp progression.
1924 – man love ballad composed george gershwin lyrics ira gershwin. written broadway musical lady, (1924), , meant included in strike band (1927) , rosalie (1928), song dropped 3 musicals before show opened. marion harris s 1928 recording helped popularize song, , has become 1 of recorded jazz standards.
1924 – oh, lady good! show tune musical lady, good, composed george gershwin lyrics ira gershwin. introduced on stage walter catlett, song became later identified ella fitzgerald after 1947 recording containing scat solo. lester young s influential , much-imitated tenor saxophone solo on count basie s 1936 recording has been cited crowning achievement , best solo [young] ever recorded .
1924 – riverboat shuffle jazz composition hoagy carmichael. introduced bix beiderbecke , wolverines, carmichael s first published composition. publisher irving mills , wolverines pianist dick voynow added credits on publication. mitchell parish wrote lyrics in 1939. carmichael wanted call tune free wheeling , band members disliked name , renamed it. paul whiteman recorded tune in 1927 beiderbecke , carmichael.
1924 – loves me show tune george white s scandals of 1924, composed george gershwin , emilia renaud lyrics ballard macdonald , buddy desylva. introduced winnie lightner on stage, , paul whiteman s 1924 recording number 1 hit. after initial success popular song, song became more played jazz artists. nat king cole , peggy lee recorded popular cross-over versions in 1940s.
1925 – dinah song composed harry akst lyrics sam m. lewis , joe young. introduced eddie cantor in musical kid boots , popularized ethel waters s 1925 version, played slower original. bing crosby s rendition mills brothers number 1 hit in 1932, , sung crosby in film big broadcast. dinah shore used theme song, , took stage name song title.
1925 – squeeze me jazz song composed fats waller. lyrics credited clarence williams, although andy razaf claims have written lyrics. song based on old blues tune called boy in boat . introduced buster bailey. albert brunies s halfway house orchestra recorded important instrumental version in 1925, , later same year williams made popular recording louis armstrong, coleman hawkins , vocalist eva taylor. bessie smith recorded influential blues version in 1926.
1925 – sweet georgia brown jazz song composed maceo pinkard music kenneth casey. bandleader ben bernie popularized song , given co-credit lyrics, although unclear whether or not participated in writing. bernie s recording hotel roosevelt orchestra stayed @ number 1 of pop charts 5 weeks. harlem globetrotters basketball team has been using brother bones , shadows version anthem since 1952. several later jazz tunes have been based on song s chord progression, such jackie mclean s donna , miles davis s dig , thelonious monk s bright mississippi .
1925 – tea 2 show tune broadway musical no, no, nanette, composed vincent youmans lyrics irving caesar. first hit recordings benson orchestra of chicago , marion harris in 1925. art tatum famously played song in 1931 cutting contest fats waller , james p. johnson. tatum s use of substitute chords on tune had lasting effect on jazz harmony, , 1939 piano solo recording inducted grammy hall of fame in 1986. song became 1 of popular songs of 1920s, , continues performed often. caesar has said lyrics took him 5 minutes write.
