the tales translated 64 languages, more 250 editions in foreign languages released. list of languages include english, hungarian, italian, bulgarian, serbo-croatian, mongolian, chinese, japanese, assamese, kannada. 4 stories malachite box published in 1943 moscow magazine internatsionalnaya literatura in english , french. in 1944 book translated russian english alan moray williams , published hutchinson. bazhov did not know translation , found out accidentally. in 1940s mistress of copper mountain , stone flower translated italian. bazhov mentioned had heard either folklorist or translator lesnaya . in letter of 25 february 1945 wrote:



shortly before war told me italian floro [sic] di pietra ( stone flower ) , madonna of mountains ( mistress of copper mountain ). rather amusing. promised give me book. did not keep promise.



bazhov never saw book, , museum workers unable locate it. malachite box in italian republished in 1978 la scuola racconti russi, cura di r. molteni grieco (lit. russian fairy tales, edited r. molteni grieco ).


in 1946 book translated bokmål , released in norway falken forlag (as steinblomsten ). several stories translated chinese , published in shanghai literary magazine in 1946. in 1947 released in french la fleur de pierre , published editions du bateau ivre. english translation made in 1950s eve manning. in all, stories have been published in english @ least 4 times.


bazhov interested in translations. called them walks in alien places . concerned ideological aspects of work , possible changes happen in translation. helped translators when could, explaining meaning of ural colloquialisms.
