following success of eps, gough s first album, hour of bewilderbeast, released in june 2000, accompanied 4 singles (including re-release of once around block).


the album critically acclaimed , badly drawn boy successful in winning 2000 mercury music prize, beating contemporaries doves £20,000 prize. album sold (300,000 copies) , considered defining work.


the badly drawn boy band throughout successful period consisted of matt wardle (keyboards/vocals), robin file (guitar), sean mcann (bass guitar) latterly replaced ex-smiths bass guitarist andy rourke, dave verner (drums).


after short break, gough returned score film adaptation of nick hornby s novel boy. impressed past work, weitz brothers asked gough score film, task undertook alone, assistance of producer steve mclaughlin. 3 singles album released during 2002.


his third album, have fed fish?, introduced more guitars , increasingly mainstream pop sound not welcomed critics. album play on gough s minor celebrity status. 3 singles , long american tour accompanied album. single right received heavy airplay on bbc radio 2, became first uk top ten single , includes lyrical references music icons such madonna , john lennon.
