the joliet , chicago railroad chartered february 15, 1855 , opened in 1856, continuing north , northeast joliet downtown chicago. leased chicago & mississippi, providing continuous railroad alton chicago. in 1857 c&m reorganized st. louis, alton , chicago railroad, , reorganization on october 10, 1862, produced chicago , alton railroad. c&a chartered alton , st. louis railroad extend line east st. louis, opened in 1864, giving line chicago east st. louis.


in 1925 chicago & alton carried 2143 million revenue ton-miles of freight , 202 million revenue passenger-miles on (at year-end) 1056 miles of road , 1863 miles of track. same numbers 1944 2596, 483, 959 , 1717.

the sovereign building in 2011 the whitehall mall store sold leh s department store, several years flagship store on hamilton street in allentown remained vacant. added national register of historic places in 1979. in december 1982 allentown store purchased sovereign realty , development. building renovated , reopened sovereign building in may 1984. renovations included glass-arched entrance pedestrian plaza between hamilton , court streets leading grapefruit-domed lobby decor of antique brass, mirrors, greenery , wing-backed chairs. main floor , basement developed retail spaces, while upper floors turned 42 private office suites. sovereign later went financial difficulties , building sold @ sheriffs sale on 22 september 1989. today building operated office building owner resides in philadelphia.
