Korean War 307th Bomb Wing

in august 1950, 307th deployed okinawa. detached strategic air command (sac), began operations under far east air forces bomber command, provisional. attached 306th bombardment group transferred parent wing on 1 september 1950 , until 10 february 1951 307th had no tactical mission. on date, wing resources used form 6th air division @ macdill , wing deployed without personnel kadena air base, absorbed resources of 307th bomb group , began flying combat missions.
during korean war, 307th bomb wing received presidential unit citation extraordinary heroism in action against enemy of united nations during period of 11 27 july 1953. during time flew 93 sorties , dropped 860 tons of bombs on targets @ north korean simanju airfield, where, despite severe airframe icing, intense enemy anti-aircraft fire , co-ordinated searchlight , fighter opposition, rendered airfield unserviceable. 307th flew last b-29 superfortress combat mission on 23 july 1953.
by end of hostilities, wing (including tactical group) had flown 5,810 combat sorties in 573 combat missions. wing remained in far east in combat ready status , on 15 august 1953 kadena became permanent base.
