in 1930s , 1940s, lakewood, ohio became center of world softball. on site owned lakewood tennis club, built in 1915 , purchased lakewood lodge of elks (bpoe) in 1917, country s first lighted softball stadium built. elks field, known, world softball championships played in 1944 , 1946. location presently supermarket. geiger s began involvement in sports when supported lakewood department of recreation , became involved in burgeoning adult softball scene.

after world war ii, geiger s sponsored hardball teams, little league , other youth programs winter indoor soccer, basketball, outdoor soccer, major , peewee baseball , autumn youth touch football. recreation department grew, geiger s involvement became greater , greater, , men s clothing business operations expanded include sporting goods.

don geiger, charley jr. s brother, began geiger s ski department in 1961, skiing in united states beginning popular. 1950s , 1960s became greatest growth period in history of skiing. geiger s pioneer in ski outfitting business, 1 of 150 establishments, nationwide have been recognized ones got things started. there 3 of these pioneer shops in ohio, 2 survive: geiger s lakewood , geiger s chagrin falls.


as interest in snow sports increased, geiger s increased involvement, adding items alpine , nordic skis , ski boots, snowboards , boots, ski , snowboard accessories, , significant number of brands in men s, women s , children s cold weather clothing , accessories.


the company has sponsored many ski oriented programs , outings throughout history in ski industry. many years, geigers supported former national ski champion jeannie thoren in campaign female-friendly ski equipment. thoren s position women s physical characteristics different of men, shorter skis not suffice. thoren has made many appearances in geiger s ski stores, urging women demand , ski manufacturers design better equipment.

the sovereign building in 2011 the whitehall mall store sold leh s department store, several years flagship store on hamilton street in allentown remained vacant. added national register of historic places in 1979. in december 1982 allentown store purchased sovereign realty , development. building renovated , reopened sovereign building in may 1984. renovations included glass-arched entrance pedestrian plaza between hamilton , court streets leading grapefruit-domed lobby decor of antique brass, mirrors, greenery , wing-backed chairs. main floor , basement developed retail spaces, while upper floors turned 42 private office suites. sovereign later went financial difficulties , building sold @ sheriffs sale on 22 september 1989. today building operated office building owner resides in philadelphia.
