john green born , grew near warrington, lifelong friend roger hunt; both played amateurs stockton heath before becoming professional footballers. green began professional career tranmere rovers, signing in february 1958, club in third division north. @ end of 1957–58 season third division north , south dissolved , replaced third division , fourth division. tranmere allowed join new third division having finished in top twelve in 1957–58 – finished ahead of thirteenth place york city on goal average.


blackpool

national service august 1959 august 1961 limited appearances in first couple of seasons blackpool player. green made debut ron suart s blackpool on 5 march 1960, in 4–2 victory @ leeds united. green went on make further 6 appearances in 1959–60 campaign. following season, 1960–61, green made 1 league appearance, on 8 october 1960, suart rang changes following single-goal defeat @ preston north end in west lancashire derby in previous outing.


in 1961–62, green made 9 league appearances. scored first goals club. first came on 14 april 1962, in 3–2 defeat @ sheffield wednesday. second followed 7 days later, time in 3–1 victory on manchester city @ bloomfield road. green made 2 appearances club in league cup: firstly in third-round tie @ workington on 5 november, strike being goal of game; , secondly in semi-final second leg game @ home norwich city on 16 april 1962, proved elimination match.


green made twelve league appearances in 1962–63, scoring 1 goal in process. during 1963–64 season suart gave green extended run in team. made 23 appearances , scored 2 goals. in 1964–65, though, ever-present throughout blackpool s 42 league games. scored twice. green returned being rotation player in 1965–66, making 26 appearances.


for 1966–67, green s final season club, midfielder became 1 of 2 greens in team, after arrival of tony green, scot, newcastle united. englishman made fifteen league appearances, third of occurred under new manager stan mortensen. green s final appearance club took place in penultimate league game of season, 3–1 defeat @ home west bromwich albion on 6 may 1967. after maintaining first division status during green s 8 seasons club, blackpool relegated second division @ end of campaign. green had played total of 145 league , cup games blackpool, scoring total of 11 goals in competitions.

in september 1967, green signed fourth division port vale stanley matthews, green had admired childhood , alongside whom had played towards end of matthews playing career blackpool. made superb start vale career, , seen 1 of club s skilful players. however, lost first team place, , made eleven appearances in 1967–68.


green spent may october 1968 vancouver royals. although green recruited bobby robson, time joined vancouver royals, robson had been replaced coach ferenc puskás, made green captain season canadian club. while there notched 4 goals in 25 matches royals struggled in north american soccer league, , finished bottom of pacific division.


returning vale park rest of 1968–69 campaign, found himself working under new manager in gordon lee. green struggled fitness played twelve games, finding himself on scoresheet in home wins against newport county , chester. helped club win promotion in 1969–70, , ever-present 46 league , 6 cup appearances. given club s player of year award contribution campaign. said came complete surprise, lads sure john james . however, not translate success on 1970–71 third division campaign, , new signings brian horton , tony lacey established in first eleven. not offered new contract @ end of season. green had played total of 98 league , cup games port vale, scoring total of 9 goals in competitions.
