for service in samar, p. i., set forth in following citation:



for extraordinary heroism , eminent , conspicuous conduct in battle @ junction of cadacan , sohoton rivers, samar, p. i., november 17, 1901. colonel bearss, captain, second in command of column upon uniting ashore in sohoton region, made surprise attack on fortified cliffs , capturing , destroying powder magazine, 40 lantacas (guns), rice, food , cuartels. due courage, intelligence, discrimination , zeal, led men cliffs [by] means of bamboo ladders height of 200 feet. cliffs of soft stone of volcanic origin, in nature of pumice , honeycombed caves. tons of rocks suspended in platforms held in position vine cables (known bejuco) in readiness precipitated upon people below. after driving insurgents position impregnable, being covered numerous trails lined poisoned spears, pits, etc., led men across river, scaled cliffs on opposite side, , destroyed camps there. , men under command overcame incredible difficulties , dangers in destroying positions according reports old prisoners, had taken 3 years perfect, held final rallying point, , never before penetrated white troops. captain bearss rendered distinguished public service in presence of enemy @ quinapundan river, samar, p. i., on january 19, 1902.

the president of united states of america, authorized act of congress, july 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting distinguished service cross colonel hiram iddings bearss (mcsn: 0-1102), united states marine corps, extraordinary heroism while attached 102d infantry regiment (army), 26th division, a.e.f., in action @ marcheville , riaville, france, 26 september 1918. colonel bearss indomitable courage , leadership led complete success of attack 2 battalions of regiment on marcheville , riaville. during attacks these 2 towns changed hands 4 times, remaining in our possession until troops ordered withdraw. under terrific machine-gun , artillery fire, colonel bearss first enter marcheville, directed operations. later, upon finding party surrounded, assisted in fighting enemy off pistol , hand grenades.

the sovereign building in 2011 the whitehall mall store sold leh s department store, several years flagship store on hamilton street in allentown remained vacant. added national register of historic places in 1979. in december 1982 allentown store purchased sovereign realty , development. building renovated , reopened sovereign building in may 1984. renovations included glass-arched entrance pedestrian plaza between hamilton , court streets leading grapefruit-domed lobby decor of antique brass, mirrors, greenery , wing-backed chairs. main floor , basement developed retail spaces, while upper floors turned 42 private office suites. sovereign later went financial difficulties , building sold @ sheriffs sale on 22 september 1989. today building operated office building owner resides in philadelphia.
