humboldt opened 1889-1890 school year in 316,000 square feet (29,400 m) building, built in 1888. school first high school on west side , 1 built since. original building housed school twenty-three years, until 1909 when new building built. additions made 1909 structure in 1924 , 1959. in 1971 there talk of closing school. result of campaign keep school open latest portion of building built in 1976.
in 1999-2000 school year humboldt placed on academic probation saint paul public schools due low test scores. related report stated problems junior high as: poor attendance , huge tardiness problem. teacher competency varies. technology not meaningfully worked instruction. school needs own principal, not shared high school , problems high school included many students not take school seriously. many staff members set low expectations students. following year humboldt posted of largest gains in state standardized tenth grade writing test. competency increased 58% 75%. in june 2001 junior high placed off probation high school remained on.
in 2005 plans approved give humboldt $1.4 million upgrade school s athletic facilities. new artificial turf stadium new bleachers , new scoreboard built. soccer, football , softball fields received upgrades. project part of larger plan intended boost enrollment local neighborhood.
as part of no child left behind act humboldt junior high needed restructuring 2009–2010 school year result of continual low test scores , not making adequate yearly progress. high school portion restructured because of alignment junior high. part of restructuring 23 teachers transferred school , new program focus created.
