for next 8 days committee listened testimony of administration officials , joint chiefs, tried justify actions. committee uncovered excuses , deceptions perhaps more alarming occurring simultaneously in watergate hearings. menu revelations raised fundamental questions military discipline , honesty, of civilian control on military , of congressional effectiveness. agreed, both congress , concerned military officers, deception employed during menu went beyond covertness. according air force historian captain earl h. tilford: deception fool enemy 1 thing, lying congress , key members of government, including chief of staff of air force , secretary of air force, else.
