richard shuttleworth son of colonel frank shuttleworth (1845—1913) , dorothy clotilda (née lang, 1879—1968), youngest daughter of rev. robert lang, vicar of old warden; had married in 1902. richard shuttleworth grandson of joseph shuttleworth (1819—1883), co-founder of clayton & shuttleworth. after husband s death dorothy clotilda shuttleworth remarried in 1914, second husband being brigadier-general william mclaren campbell (1864—1924) , had daughter him, anne elspeth campbell (1917-1986). anne campbell married h.s.h. alexander georg maria ignatius von croy (1912—2002) in 1938 (they divorced in 1968) , had 3 children.

he educated @ eton college, accepted in 1922. did not excel academically, except in eton s school of mechanics, , on leaving college attained necessary qualifications through crammer join army. after passing out @ sandhurst joined 16th/5th queen s royal lancers. keen , accomplished horseman, between 1927 , 1932 rode in oakley club s hunt, various point-to-points, hurdles, steeplechases , in 1931 won subalterns cup. on attaining inheritance in 1932 left army hoping join royal air force, considered old.

by time had begun collect , restore vintage cars. richard shuttleworth first took part in london brighton veteran car run in 1928. entered more 1 car event. participated 1928—1938 except 1935 where: r. o. shuttleworth failed send in entry before closing date, joined others @ westminster bridge benz. companion @ wheel charles martin, , hairy goat-skin coats, dated same period car, admired.


he won brighton speed trials on bugatti type 51 in 1934, , again in 1935 on alfa-romeo p3 tipo b, breaking sir malcolm campbell s course record. won one-off hill climb @ joel park, northwood hill, middlesex, on 22 june 1935, on bugatti, in time of 30.16 seconds. greatest victory came in donington grand prix in 1935. won mountain championship @ brooklands later year. in 1936 had bad crash in alfa romeo @ south african grand prix. injuries suffered caused him retire motor racing.

shuttleworth became interested in aviation , earned pilot s licence. collected old aircraft, repaired them flight @ workshops @ old warden, bedfordshire , flew them @ air displays. acquired wrecked blériot xi , deperdussin 1910 monoplane local businessman , restored them; blériot world s oldest flying powered aircraft.


when second world war broke out shuttleworth joined royal air force volunteer reserve (rafvr). reached rank of pilot officer , selected join aircraft crash investigation branch once had completed raf flying training, , achieve in august 1940 training no. 12 operational training unit raf @ raf mount farm, oxfordshire. in hours of 2 august 1940 took off in fairey battle light bomber cross-country training exercise, crashed hill @ nearby ewelme , killed.

the sovereign building in 2011 the whitehall mall store sold leh s department store, several years flagship store on hamilton street in allentown remained vacant. added national register of historic places in 1979. in december 1982 allentown store purchased sovereign realty , development. building renovated , reopened sovereign building in may 1984. renovations included glass-arched entrance pedestrian plaza between hamilton , court streets leading grapefruit-domed lobby decor of antique brass, mirrors, greenery , wing-backed chairs. main floor , basement developed retail spaces, while upper floors turned 42 private office suites. sovereign later went financial difficulties , building sold @ sheriffs sale on 22 september 1989. today building operated office building owner resides in philadelphia.
