the market cross in bath street dates 15th century, shelter having been rebuilt in 1834. has central octagonal pier, socket raised on 4 steps, hexagonal shelter 6 arched four-centred openings, shallow two-stage buttresses @ each angle, , embattled parapet. shaft crowned abacus figures in niches, late 19th century, although cross missing. rebuilt thomas, marquis of bath. scheduled ancient monument (somerset county no 21) , grade ii* listed building. in january 2000, cross damaged in traffic accident. 2002, cross had been rebuilt , area around redesigned protect , enhance appearance. cross badly damaged again in march 2012, when taxi crashed late @ night demolishing 2 sides. repair work, included addition of wooden-clad steel posts protect against future crashes, completed in november 2012 @ cost of £60,000.


hannah more, philanthropist , educator, founded school in village in late 18th century children of miners. first school located in 17th-century house. named hannah more s cottage , grade ii-listed building used local community meeting place.
