the innerbelt looking northeast


the innerbelt portion of state route 59 in akron not utilized. designed after other highway projects in akron completed, innerbelt envisioned 21.5-mile (34.6 km) stretch; portion ever built 2.24-mile (3.60 km) stretch near akron’s downtown. freeway designed 6 lanes (with right of way eight). includes 2 collector streets along entire corridor which, combined, @ points wide freeway itself. interchages long, @ points crossing each other, additional overpasses required ramps . ramps connecting interstate 76/interstate 77, opened october 8, 1986, more decade after of rest of highway opened, turn west, traffic can enter innerbelt if traveling east on interstate , innerbelt, vehicles can exit west onto interstate. while ohio department of transportation (odot) evaluating changing design, drivers need take regular roads make connection. financial concession when southernmost part of innerbelt built. connection northern freeway (state route 8) never made, , temporary link martin luther king blvd./perkins st. became permanent.


shortly after connection interstate 76/interstate 77 opened, became clear innerbelt not live expectations; not served western ramps not willing travel on 5 blocks of marginal roads connect 2.24-mile (3.60 km) freeway. however, innerbelt’s underuse has given advantage few planners had foreseen. in july 2001, city announced innerbelt closed several days while commercial being shot. highway surveyed producers of matrix reloaded movie possible shooting spot of highway scene. peter novak, matrix s location scout said looking @ finding practical freeway film car chase on, going 6 7 weeks of shutting down major freeway. thought needed 4 5 miles of super highway in both directions. sent scouts out around world: had people looking around kuala lumpur, people looking @ bangkok, people looking @ autobahn in germany, , looked through northern united states. don’t think left stone unturned, , wound freeway in akron... idea scrapped, because in event scene have reshot, time reset cars in start position take long.


in 1999 akron mayor don plusquellic suggested ripping northern end of freeway, making city street, , developing surrounding land. idea fostered trip milwaukee, in plusquellic saw much-maligned park east freeway spur in city s downtown removed in order reuse land. similar plan presented in late 2014 proposed removal of freeway north of west exchange street overpass upgrade of adjacent frontage roads compensate. construction relating plan started in 2017.
