the stories collection inspired numerous adaptations, including films, radio , stage adaptations.


the soviet poet demyan bedny impressed tales decided adapt them poetry. began work on 27 june 1939 , adapted 14 original stories 1 october 1939. titled manuscript gornaya poroda (russian: Горная порода, lit. rock ). bedny made changes length of scenes, changed character names, endings, dialogues, , titles of several stories, e.g. great snake called brothers , manager s boot-soles called deserved . started prepare publication, plans hindered when saw bazhov s new stories. bedny not happy them , abandoned book. published after death in 1959, , not known now.


on 10 may 1939 art committee under council of people s commissars decided organize parade of children s theatres, , bazhov asked write play based on malachite box. play finished on 11 august , performed @ sverdlovsk youth theatre same year. following success of play, sverdlovsk youth theatre staged children s plays yermak s swans in 1942 , silver hoof in 1947, both written soviet playwright evgeny permyak. moscow puppet theater staged 1947 play tales urals (russian: Сказы старого Урала, tr. skazy starogo urala) klavdiya filippova, based on sinyushka s , golden hair . filippova combined great snake , snake trail create poloz s daughter (russian: Полозова дочка, tr. polozova dochka) , stone flower master craftsman create children s play stone flower. these plays published in 1949 collection plays children s theatre based on bazhov s stories published in sverdlovsk. storied considered difficult young reader more simplified stage adaptations, e.g. sad ending of sinyushka s changed happy one, , pavel bazhov not opposed changes.

stone flower adapted stage many times. first ballet of same name created alexander fridlender in 1944. opera in 4 acts stone flower kirill molchanov premiered on 10 december 1950 in moscow @ stanislavski , nemirovich-danchenko music theatre. sergey severtsev wrote russian language libretto. first opera of molchanov. role of danila (tenor) sung mechislav shchavinsky, larisa adveyeva sung mistress of copper mountain (mezzo-soprano), dina potapovskaya sung katya (coloratura soprano).


the 1954 ballet tale of stone flower created sergei prokofiev. skazy, called stone flower, 1987 play of maly theatre.
